Volunteers are an invaluable resource in our community. They give their time freely to help others lead safe and fulfilling lives. Most communities in Greater Victoria have a central volunteer organization which recruits and coordinates the efforts of hundreds of volunteers. For example, Beacon Community Services organizes over 450 volunteers with over 1,000 clients receiving one-to-one volunteer services each year. Each volunteer organization offers slightly different services, but they generally offer a combination of the following:
- Volunteer Drives
- Income Tax preparation
- Reassurance phone calls
- Visiting
- Walking and recreation
- Gardening and odd jobs
- Dog walking
- Reading
- Filling out forms
- Legal and financial information
- Information and Referral
- Senior Peer Counselling
Beacon Community Services is a good place to start to find out which volunteer organization offers the services and location required. Services offered by volunteer organizations and many other support organizations for seniors rely heavily on their volunteers. Volunteers are often involved in every aspect of each organization, from program delivery to administration and fundraising. Many of the organizations listed below are reliant on groups of hardworking volunteers.
